The convictions of three Hong Kong residents (back in 2024) under the national security law have shown us what the HK government is willing to do. What the protestors did—writing messages on their T-shirts, spraying graffiti, and publishing comments—testifies to their desire for Western ideals of freedom and democracy. However, as a Hong Konger, I believe Western media offers excessive coverage of these incidents and portrays them as a giant movement against Beijing’s authority. In actuality, Hong Kongers are on a much more subtle journey.
Many here feel a clear divide between the pro-democratic desires and the longing for stability and economic prosperity fueled by years of unrest. We dread anarchy - after all, Hong Kong is still our home. For us, Hong Kong’s story is not black and white, good against evil; it is a story of what it means to strive for the best while keeping the best from turning into the worst.
